"Dark Roadside Repairs"
It may have been every rider's nightmare, but it was a constant problem: running out of gas. Gauges were not always mounted on stripped down choppers, smaller tanks were the style, and a gas reserve wasn't always a mechanical option. What usually saved the day (or night) was a beer can on the side of the road to be filled with fuel drained from a brother's ride. An Easyriders reader once sent in a letter thanking an anonymous biker for pushing his out-of-gas scooter quite a few miles to a station. He did so by placing his size 12 boot on the fuel-starved Harley's swingarm leg and keeping it there for the duration of the ride. Fortunately for the bikers in this early classic Mann illustration, a flashlight and beer can filled the resourcefulness bill. Even a towrope might have been an option; regardless, you counted on your bros to come through for you, because cell phones and highway call boxes on such fateful nights were the stuff of wishful thinking.
